“… tradition is not restricted to re-creating old things just the way they used to be. It is important to create thoughtful things that progress with an environment that is evolving. Actually, this is the real way to inherit tradition…”
– Sori Yanagi
This March, as SUPERMAMA celebrates our 9th Anniversary, we present “TAKUMI NEXT X SUPERMAMA”, a POP-UP showcase of the next generation of traditional Japanese craftsmen. The term “Takumi” (E), refers to an “artisan” or “craftsman” in Japanese. As social norms and lifestyles evolve, we ponder the future of traditional crafts and the existential role of the craftsmen through a fine selection of everyday goods. The showcase will features 65 pieces of articles from 48 crafts facilities located in 14 different prefectures in Japan.
Curated by SUPERMAMA in collaboration with JETRO (the Japan External Trade Organisation), the showcase is part of the disaster relief efforts for 14 prefectures in Japan affected by the typhoon previously. The prefectures are Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Niigata, Yamanashi, Nagano and Shizuoka.
